The
Eleutheros Cooke House was built by Sandusky's first lawyer and
the father of Jay Cooke, the financier of the civil war, in 1843-1844
on what is now a downtown corner.
It
was moved to 1415 Columbus Avenue in the latter part of the 1870's
and rebuilt.
Only
three other families have lived here in its long history. The last
owners were Randolph and Estelle Dorn, who purchased the house in
the early 1950's and completely redecorated it. Mrs. Dorn left the
house and its contents to the Ohio Historical Society upon her death.
It
remains much as it looked when the Dorns lived here. Decorative
features include an extensive collection of glass and English porcelain,
as well as antiques and furniture contemporary with the 50's and
beyond.

The
garden contains a working greenhouse, as well as many plantings,
which bloom throughout the growing season.
The
gift shop has local and Ohio memorabilia, as well as light refreshments
at nominal prices.
